Countdown To Chelsea With The Foxgloves
Summary
Yes, that’s what I’m thinking too, because the seasons, the weather, the lack of rain, just the sheer heat of it, has got them all confused.
So why do I care about foxgloves in two weeks? Why do I care about our flowers at all?
Well, two weeks today we’ll be in the big old city of London at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the greatest flower show the world, and I confess I’m nervous.
Our locally grown flowers are growing, some waiting, but some are going over. And that’s the whole point…….
The point is seasonality – and with that sustainability. You see I care about the provenance, the fact they haven’t been flown in from anywhere, and that they’re there at all – and we’re not the only ones who care that they are there – the sustaining sustainability of them is what our bees adore about them too.
We like to see ourselves as flag bearing for local, for seasonal, for true seasonality. For at the heart of our canalside cutting garden is a care for the environment, even the voles that are digging up my Nigella right now! Beauty and creativity as a act of rebellion – I’ve read that recently – if you said that let me know because I love its sentiment and its quiet but strong – dare I say fierce – determination. This is the essence of sustainability and our mission with our Moon in Bloom – to inspire everyone to seek out their local growers – I belong to Flowers From The Farm and there are many of us up and down the country now.
So what flowers have we to take to Chelsea with us?
Ask me in a week’s time, because then I might have a better view on those Foxgloves. But for now, here’s a time when the digitalis were glorious and the weather was less environmentally worrying.
