My Favourite Christmas Wreath Foliage

Summary

Fierceblooms discusses her favourite Christmas wreath foliage that she is using in her seasonal sustainable Christmas wreaths this year.

Wherever you are the world, our hope is that you are planning to use locally grown seasonal foliage to create your Christmas wreaths.

I think there’s an authenticity, a real connection, and heartfelt honesty about creating Christmas wreaths using materials you have either grown, or things that you can find, or bring in from your garden. Those ingredients also have another huge advantage, and it is this. As well as being fresher, there’s also no carbon footprint, and really no need for them to have flown for miles to adorn your own Christmas wreath.

Our fierce ethos is that scent, season and ultimately sustainability is the most beautiful thing we can choose to create our wreaths with. Here in Cheshire, next to the canal, our hawthorn hedges are filled to bursting with berried ivy. We grow lots of foliage in our cut flower garden too, as when the flowers are gone in winter, their leaves provide colour and shape, and the promise of things to come in springtime.

I confess I always leave lots of holly berries for the blackbirds too but truthfully, we have quite a large tree at our gate. Our desire is for everyone to think of foraging as a thoughtful, responsible, and nature enhancing activity. Dried “weeds” can add wonderful texture – take the seed heads out of our garden, and leave some for the birds too.

Spruce, holly and ivy are traditional and beautiful ingredients for Christmas but there are other less used but equally brilliant that you can add to your Christmas wreaths . Some of our favourites include:

  • Bay
  • Bracken
  • Camellia
  • Cotoneaster
  • Pittosporum
  • Skimmia

Always, our fierce focus in our unique online classes is to share how we create our signature "Wild garden Style" floral designs using local, scented, seasonal and sustainable flowers.

In fact. we only ever use local, garden grown (in our case) British flowers. Our desire is in every class to inspire you to create your own planet friendly, environmentally conscious floral designs using ingredients that reflect your season, your flora and your locale.

Rather than a constraint, we believe creating with your own seasonal garden grown flowers encourages you to make floral art that truly embodies your own unique floral signature.

2023 will be our 4th season of live online classes.  We look forward to continued conversations with sustainable floral enthusiasts from the far flung Scotland Highlands, down to Devon and Cornwall, across to Wales, and way beyond to North America, Australia, New Zealand.
